Glendale council officially opposes bill to block West Valley casino — Your West Valley
The Glendale council has formally opposed a bill in Congress designed to block a casino from locating along the city’s border.
The 4-3 vote comes a week after a study session at which the subject first came up, with city staff asking for the council to provide direction. The consensus that came out of that meeting was that Glendale, as a city, would express its formal opposition to H.R. 1410, also known as the “Keep the Promise Act,” federal legislation that would prevent the Tohono O’Odham Nation from opening the West Valley Resort casino near 91st and Northern avenues.
Council member Norma Alvarez said it is time for Glendale to stop looking at the Tohono O’Odham as opponents and find a way to make them allies.
“I think we need to go forward, to get to the point,” she said. “Let’s start with negotiations and let’s get it out in the open.”
