Press Release — Support for West Valley Resort Project Continues to Grow
GLENDALE, Ariz. – The City of Glendale officially supports the Tohono O’odham Nation’s West Valley Resort project—again. With a decisive 6-1 vote, the City Council acted on Tuesday to reiterate its earlier Resolution 4828, by which Glendale officially endorsed the project. The Cities of Peoria, Tolleson, and Surprise have also unanimously supported the project.
Construction of the gaming facility is fully underway, and is scheduled to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2015. In addition to hundreds of construction jobs, more than 500 permanent jobs will be created this year alone. This will expand to more than 3,000 permanent jobs as the rest of the complex is built out.
Despite the clear, convincing support for this economic development project from municipalities throughout the West Valley, several members of the Arizona congressional delegation have introduced federal legislation to try to stop the project from moving forward.
“This land is now part of our reservation, and the federal courts have confirmed that we have the right to develop West Valley Casino and Resort,” said Tohono O’odham Nation Chairman Ned Norris, Jr. “Some members of Congress want to take away our court-confirmed property rights, and force us to terminate the jobs we already have started bringing to the West Valley. It just does not make any sense.”
