Press Release — Update on Construction of the West Valley Resort Project (with presentation)
SELLS, Ariz. – The Tohono O’odham Nation’s West Valley Resort project is moving forward and is poised to begin major construction operations. All pre-construction activities, including soil testing, archaeological surveys and related studies have been completed. A joint venture headed by Hunt Construction Group and PENTA Building Group has been assembled to construct the resort, and all key subcontractors have been retained to work on the project.
Fencing around the entire construction site is complete. Next, a $7 million grading project and related activities will begin on the site. Construction operations will continue to ramp up while the Nation awaits delivery of multimillion dollar orders for steel and concrete.
The Nation is aware that the West Valley community supports the new jobs the Resort will bring, and is working to open the gaming portion of its facility in the project’s first permanent structure, which is expected to be completed within the next 12 months.
This first phase of the facility will feature over 1,000 slots, restaurants, bar, rewards center, and cage, and will include a 1,100 space surface parking lot. Its operation will also create more than 500 new, permanent jobs in the West Valley. After the first phase is established, construction of the second phase of the $400 million project will continue, including the final, fully-developed gaming facility.
Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise CEO Andy Asselin said, “We are very excited to be moving forward with developing this state-of-the-art entertainment facility. We are eager to begin gaming and creating thousands of jobs and positive economic development in the West Valley.”
The Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise is an entity of the Tohono O’odham Nation, a federally-recognized Indian tribe, with existing reservation lands in Maricopa County, Pinal County, and Pima County, Arizona. The West Valley Resort is located at 95th and Northern avenues on lands that were taken into trust by the federal government and it will generate thousands of new jobs and more than $300 million in annual economic impact.
